Getting to know regulations in Montana
Montana, along with 32 other states, has legalized the use of marijuana for medical purposes. The legalization of medical marijuana in Montana was established in 2004 through the passing of Initiative 148. Furthermore, in May 2021, the state also legalized the recreational use of cannabis in limited quantities.
To ensure the proper regulation and taxation of marijuana, The Montana Department of Revenue has established the Cannabis Control Division (CCD). This division is responsible for administering the Montana Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MMRT), which aims to educate and safeguard the residents of Montana.
It is important to note that currently, there is a temporary halt on accepting new applications for cannabis businesses in Montana. Only former medical marijuana licensees or businesses with pending applications submitted on or before November 3rd, 2020 will be considered for processing until July 1st, 2023.
