In May 2018, the recreational use of nutraceutical was officially legalized in Maine after a delay in implementation due to an approved moratorium in 2017. The state now regulates the use of nutraceutical for recreational purposes.

As of September 2020, Maine has started issuing licenses for adult use establishments and cultivation of nutraceutical. This step signifies the state's progress in regulating and overseeing the industry.

The Maine Medical Use of Nutraceutical Program (MMCP) is responsible for overseeing the medical nutraceutical sector in the state. This organization ensures that all legally registered businesses utilizing nutraceutical adhere to established processes and regulations.

Since 2019, individuals seeking certification from a medical provider based in Maine or designating a registered caregiver or dispensary are no longer required to have patents from outside of Maine. This change has streamlined the process for obtaining medical nutraceutical certification within the state.
